Farid Peiravian
Prof. Peiravian holds a Ph.D. in Transportation Planning and specializes in the application of GeoSpatial techniques—including GeoAI—in Civil and Transportation Engineering. With academic training in Civil Engineering (B.Sc., M.Sc., Ph.D.) and a certificate in GIS, Dr. X’s work focuses on Spatial Analysis, Sustainability, Resilience, Safety, and Accessibility. His research interests include Applications of GeoAI, Urban Resiliency, and Active Transportation. He brings a blend of practical experience and analytical expertise to his roles as a researcher, educator, and practitioner.

Afshin Allahyari (Ph.D.)
Afshin has received his bachelor’s degree in Civil Engineering from Azad University in Tehran, Iran. He was then awarded a Masters degree in Civil Engineering from UIC and is now a Ph.D. candidate at UIC studying Civil Engineering with a specialty in transportation. He has previously worked on micro-mobility and transit equity and is now focusing his time on the public transit schedule.

I graduated UIC in 2023 and completed my thesis, which was concentrated on pedestrian safety during COVID-19 and its socioeconomic impacts, as part of my masters degree. I was able to take part in 2 conferences (Transportation Research Board Annual Meeting 2024 and Transportation Research Symposium 2025) with my research in the poster presentation category. I currently work as a transportation engineer in a civil engineering firm and mainly deal with traffic and pedestrian safety along with geometric and signal design. I have contributed to various projects and have gained hands on experience, striving for the improvement of transportation infrastructure, pedestrian safety, and vehicle mobility. I continue my work in transportation research and aim to develop necessary skills and experience to work towards a PhD in the future.

EAPIP/GPIP Interns
Nikitas Vaselopulos (B.Sc.)
Nikitas earned his Bachelor’s degree in Civil Engineering at UIC. He previously worked for the Active Transportation Lab as a GPIP intern and researched topics related to Active Transportation, as well as creating websites for the Geomatics and Active Transport labs. In the future, he hopes to work as a transportation, structural, or geotechnical engineer.
GPIP Intern: Amelia
Amelia Perisho (B.Sc. student)
Amelia is an undergraduate student at UIC for Civil Engineering. In her time at UIC so far, she has been involved as a volunteer with the Women in Engineering Programs and hopes to represent women civil engineers with them further. She is working as a GPIP intern for the Geomatics Lab, focused on researching topics relating to drone technology use, and assisting in the development of the Geomatics website. In her studies, she plans to focus on and later become a structural or geotechnical engineer, with high regard to sustainability design.
GPIP Intern: Siddharth
Siddharth Nair (B.Sc. student)
Siddharth is an undergraduate student at UIC pursuing a bachelor’s degree in computer engineering. He worked as a GPIP intern for the Geomatics Lab, where he developed the Geomatics and Active Transport site for the department. As the tech intern of the lab, he contributed to improving the sites by updating them with new content and enhancing their appearance. He will be starting his junior year in the Fall.
GPIP Intern: Omar
Omar Mostafa (B.Sc. student)
Omar is an undergraduate student at UIC, and is pursuing a Bachelors degree in Computer Science. He is currently working for the Geospatial Artificial Intelligence intern as a GPIP intern and has been researching topics related to GeoAI, and, as well as in what way you can use Artificial Intelligence in order to predict weather, house costs, etc. In the future he hopes to work with AI in order to advance society.

Brian Li earned his bachelor’s degree in Computer Science at UIC. As a GPIP intern and web developer for the Department of Civil, Materials, and Environmental Engineering (CME), he contributed to the development and maintenance of three research websites: Active Transport, Institute of Transportation Engineers Chapter, and GeoAI. His work focused on content integration and visual enhancements to improve accessibility and user experience. Brian plans to pursue a career in software development, with a focus on backend engineering and frontend development.

Ky An Dang (B.Sc. student)
Ky An Dang is an undergraduate student at UIC pursuing a bachelor’s degree in Computer Science. As a Web Developer Intern for the Department of Civil, Materials, and Environmental Engineering (CME), he contributed to the development of three websites: Active Transportation, Institute of Transportation Engineers Chapter, and GeoAI, significantly reducing front-end development time for future projects. His work focused on implementing responsive design and creating resource management sources to improve site navigation and user accessibility. Ky plans to pursue a career in software development, with a focus on Game Development.

Sheza Shah (B.Sc.)
Sheza Shah earned her bachelor’s degree in Computer Science at UIC. Through her Web Development Internship with the Department of Civil, Materials, and Environmental Engineering (CME), she contributed to four department websites: GeoAI, Active Transportation, Rail Transportation, and Institute of Transportation Engineers Chapter. Her work spanned front-end development, accessibility improvements, and cross-site content management. Sheza plans to pursue a career in software development, with a focus on Web Development.
